When people talk about diversity, they often think about countries and cultures. There are many ways people can be diverse.
Race is part of diversity. There are many different races in the world and the United States. There is a history of discrimination against people who are not white. This continues to be a problem.
Religion is part of diversity. Most people in the United States are Christian. There are many different kinds of Christianity. There are also many people who belong to other religions. Some people do not follow any religion.
Disability is part of diversity. We can see some disabilities. For example, we can see if someone uses a wheelchair. We cannot see other disabilities. We cannot see mental illness, such as depression or anxiety.
Gender is a part of diversity. Gender describes being male (a man) or female (a woman). Often, women face many challenges that men do not.
Sexual orientation is part of diversity. In the United States, it is legal for gay or lesbian people to get married.
Sometimes it is hard to feel comfortable with diversity. What is important is to show respect, be nice, and try to understand.
There are probably clubs and organizations at your college or in your community where you can learn more about diversity.
