A student’s grade point average (GPA) is important because it shows how the student is doing in school. Teachers look at students' GPA to see if they are ready for the next class. A good GPA can also help a student get money for college. To calculate your GPA, you:
- add the numbers together
- divide that total by how many numbers you added together
Example:
Anna's Grades and GPA
Class | Grade | Grade Points |
English | B | 3.0 |
Math | A | 4.0 |
Biology | C | 2.0 |
GPA | 3.0 |
To calculate Anna's average GPA:
- Add the numbers in the Grade Points column:
3 + 4 + 2 = 9 - Divide the total (9) by how many numbers you added together (3):
9 / 3 = 3 - The average is 3. Anna's GPA is 3.0
