How are Online Classes Different?

Myths About Online Classes

Myth: Faculty who teach online classes have to be online 24/7.

Reality: Not true! Although I will try to respond quickly, I may not be available evenings or weekends.  Please send an email anyway so I know your needs.  I will respond within 1-2 days (usually within 24 hours).

Myth: Online classes are easier.

Reality: Nope! Online classes are just as challenging, if not more rigorous, than face-to-face classes.

What are some common characteristics of online courses?

Online courses...

  • Are asynchronous, with instructors and learners logged on at different times of the day/week.
  • Have a clear structure, allowing the learner to progress through materials at their own speed and on their own time (while adhering to regular deadlines).
  • Provide a regular and predictable rhythm of activities and assignments throughout the week.
  • Use technology creatively and flexibly to meet learning objectives.
  • Require more self-discipline and self-regulation from both professors and learners.

This class is hybrid.  Class materials are available through Canvas.  Attendance is not required but available.  That means it can work around your other classes, work or family life.  It will require dedicated time and effort to be successful.  We have a lot to do, but it will be worth it!  Let's make this a successful quarter!
