π©βπ Second Quarter FAQ's π
Here are some questions that previous students have asked upon entering 2nd quarter. There may be helpful information here for you. If you have additional questions please be sure to ask them.
ATTENDANCE:
- Do we get a "free" 6 hours if we miss like we did last quarter that we will not make up?
No, there are no "free" hours in 2nd quarter. If you miss any time during your second quarter you must make up that time before being eligible to move on to 3rd quarter.
- If I need to make up time... how do we make up the hours?
You have opportunity to come in early or stay late by arrangement and approval only:
- 7:30am to 8:00am - Monday through Thursday
- 2:30pm to 3:30pm - Monday through Thursday
- 2:30pm to 10:00pm - Monday through Thursday
- 9:00am to 3:30pm - Fridays
- Those are the only times recognized and must be prior approved or the time will not count. If you plan on coming in early you must let me know, for security reasons I do not open the door until after 7:30 unless I know someone is coming. If you arrive at 7:30 and the doors are not yet opened, wait at the door - do not call security to let you in. I will open the door as soon as possible and if you are at the door when I open it you will get credit for arriving at 7:30. If you go back to your car and wait you will not get credit.
- I have to be at work at 3pm every day, can I leave 15 minutes early every day to get to work?
No, you can't leave early every day. Your hours in attendance are very strictly monitored and reported to DOL and attendance is a large part of the program since you will now be working hands on. You will need to make arrangements with your work if you can't get there on time.
- Absences: If we are going to be absent do we need to let you know and how do you prefer we get a hold of you to let you know we will not be there?
Yes, you will need to let me know if you are not going to be attending class. The best way to reach me is either my cptc email (jennifer.whipple@cptc.edu) or through the canvas inbox, your choice.
- If I bank extra hours this quarter can I use them next quarter?
Unfortunately no, every quarter starts over new. You will need to bank or make up any hour missed for that quarter once you start.
ACADEMIC:
- Why do I feel like I don't know what is going on in class? " I don't remember being told that."
If you don't read the Power Points and study the materials you will fall behind in class and feel lost. You can't just use your phone to click on assignments in canvas and ignore the rest of the content. You must go through your canvas modules and read all of the content pages and Power Points.
- My test grade was lowered to 80% even though I got a 97%, why is that?
If you take a module test late, your grade will be reduced to an 80%. Take your tests on time.
- test retakes: If we score lower than an 80% on a test do we only have one chance to retake it?
Yes, and the score of the retake when averaged with the first test must be 80% or better. If not, then the module will need to be repeated in the next quarter, before moving on. If this happens, one would be able to continue in class, but would not graduate from that class until the module that was failed was taken over and passed.
- How much at home practice would you recommend us having when practicing for waxing and facials? Has anyone ran out of product from their kit and what would a student need to do to get more? When coming early for class at 7:30am to build up hours, what would we be doing during that time?
I would recommend as much practice as you can manage with outside commitments. You will have a wax pot for home use, so getting as much at home waxing practice as you can will be really helpful. You will also get a mannequin in your kit so you can practice the cleansing routine and the facial massage routines. I recommend practicing those at least once a day until you have it memorized and then keep practicing as much as possible to get smoother especially with the massage routine. This will really take a lot of pressure off during the final exam.
- A question I have about the class is how the tests are formatted like if they are long answers or multiple choice?
All of the tests have several different types of format. They are multiple choice, true/false and some are choose all that are correct - where you choose as many of the available answers that are correct. Every module test first has a practice test that you will take as many times as you need until you get a 100%. Each of these practice tests have anywhere from 20 to 60 questions. Once you get the 100% the module test will then be unlocked. The module tests take 10 random questions from the practice tests - so everyone will have a different module test but they will all be pulled from the practice tests. If you know the information when you take the practice tests, you will do fine on the module tests - if you had to guess on the practice tests you might not do very well on the module tests.
- How many projects will we have this quarter?
You will have assignments to complete that correspond to each module.
- What types of assignments we would have and how assessments would work as well as make up hours?
You will have many different types of assignments. You can see what they look like by browsing through canvas. All classes are in one tile and arranged by module. Some assignment types are:
printing out protocol pages for your protocol binder, book questions, some hands on assignments - like makeup application that we will be doing in class but turning pictures in on canvas, kahoot! challenges, and more...
Each assignment has a due date and can be seen on the agenda section of the calendar in canvas as well as the assignment tab.
Make up hours can be done in person with approval or you can do the published make up assignments in canvas (up to 18 hours).
A question that I have about the class is how many days do we typically spend on a procedure? Like, do we spend a day going over what is it, how it's done and the benefits then we go into practice the next day and have a couple days working on it?
It really depends on the service that we are learning and performing. For more involved services like waxing and facials we spend a zoom session going over the theory and then several days to weeks practicing. If it's something like a foot soak or lash/brow tinting there really isn't separate theory involved and we learn by watching a demonstration and then practice on each other while I move around the room helping and answering questions.
PARTICIPATION:
- If we end up having a contraindication for a service we are practicing in class, will it count against us in our participation grade? Of course, I mean a contraindication we canβt control, not that I shaved my legs the day before we were supposed to wax legs.
If you are medically contraindicated it will not count towards your participation grade. If you choose to shave before waxing... yes, it can affect your participation grade.
- I don't want a bikini wax, do I have to participate?
yes, you do need to participate in all areas of study. This includes a bikini wax. You do not need to have or perform a Brazilian. You do not need to be in front of the entire class when having a bikini wax.
DRESS CODE:
- I was curious about the shoes for class. I know you had said black shoes, I was wondering if the entire shoe has to be black or just the majority of it? I have Nike tennis shoes but the Nike symbol on them is white, other than that though they are plain black, is that ok?
Yes, a majority of black is fine. Your shoes need to be comfortable, not make any noise (clacking like heels) and non-marking. Tennis shoes are great. Many students also wear crocs.
- I was wondering if jogger style scrub pants are ok?
Yes, joggers are great, they are especially nice for keeping the bottoms of the pants clean, since they are cuffed and don't drag on the ground.
- I get really cold. Can I wear a sweater or sweatshirt?
No, you will need to take your outer gear off when going to the tables to work on each other. The temperature does fluctuate from hot to cold in the classroom so if you run cold you may want to wear an undershirt. You can wear an under shirt like Under Armour or 32 Degrees undershirts. The color does not matter - just no writing on the sleeves and the sleeves must be able to be pushed up to the elbow and stay there on their own.
- Do I have to wear foundation makeup every day to class?
You do not need to wear foundation every day. I only require makeup on days that we are performing facials. Makeup removal is a crucial part of the facial so we all need to have makeup on so that we can learn to easily and effectively remove it. Otherwise you don't need to wear makeup.
- Can we still wear nail polish on toe nails?
Nail polish on your toes is absolutely fine and encouraged! π Especially since we will be doing foot soaks and foot massages.
MISC. Q's
- Will break/lunch be at a routine time?
Most days it will fall somewhere between 10:30 and 12:30... It depends on what we are doing on the tables and when a good breaking point comes up. It will be anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour depending on what we are doing for the day.
- When it is time to learn how to sugar, will we be making the sugar wax ourselves?
You can make your own sugar paste, it's pretty easy to do. But no, everyone will get a professionally manufactured sugar kit complete with paste, pre and post products.
- Is there anything you recommend that we purchase to carry our books and kit in?
I recommend that you get your kit first, then assess what all you have and what you plan on transporting before you buy anything. There are some items provided to help move things around.
- I've been getting questioned by friends and family when I will be able to begin working on one or more of them as models. Is it that we learn how to wax, (etc.) on one another in class first and then once 3rd quarter rolls around we begin with a model? Once we learn how to do certain things can we work on friends or family at home?
Once you learn a skill you will be expected to practice some at home on friends and family. You will have various assignments that will require that during 2nd quarter. You will be able to begin working on friends and family in the clinic setting as models starting 3rd quarter.
- My baby sitter just called in sick, can I bring my child with me to class?
Clover park has a no-children in class policy. Due to safety and insurance issues children are not allowed to attend class with their parents. This can be a really hard situation. If your child care falls through you can't leave your child. Do the best you can with the situation and possibly try to have an emergency back up planned in case of child care emergencies.
- Some questions I had going into this class/ quarter were mostly what's in our kits also how hands on we were going to be.
You will be getting some facial products, some body treatment supplies, fan brushes, tweezers, comedo extractor, scissors, a wax pot, wax kit, some disposable supplies for use at home, sugar kit, some bins for organization, and a mannequin. I may have forgotten something... but that's most everything. π
We are going to be VERY hands on this quarter - count on doing hands on almost every day we are on campus for at least 5 to 6 hours of the 6.5 hours we are in class (except when you are the model for a classmate -you will then be relaxing and enjoying the service your classmate is performing). There might be some random days that you will be doing some book work or canvas work but not very many. I will always let you know when this is going to happen so you can be prepared with books and laptops or tablets etc.
- A question I have is what is all included in the kit? Also will we be keeping it on campus or at home?
You will be getting some facial products, some body treatment supplies, fan brushes, tweezers, comedo extractor, scissors, a wax pot, wax kit, some disposable supplies for use at home, sugar kit, some bins for organization, and a mannequin. I may have forgotten something... but that's most everything. π
Some of your kit you will take home - like your wax pot and wax kit and the disposable supplies. The rest you will keep at school. I will walk you through what goes where when we get our kits.
