About This Course

Welcome!

Instruction is provided through MyITLab - the interactive learning site from Pearson Publishing.  All coursework is submitted fully online. Participation is required - that means actively completing required assignments and communicating with faculty.  Some assignments are available for a limited time so please watch the calendar.  Zoom meetings can be arranged as requested.

The Purpose of this Class

PowerPoint

This course demonstrates the PowerPoint application functions to prepare visual presentations.  Create professionally formatted presentations that include animation and transitions.  Insert and format charts, graphics, diagrams, and pictures.  Save presentation for various delivery options including Web pages.

Course Pace

This course is designed to be completed in 44 hours over a 8-10 week period.  Reading, videos, tests and projects will need 3-5 hours weekly to stay with the course schedule. The full classroom will open on the class start date.

Prerequisites

  • Computer Literacy Recommended - See Computer Literacy Module (following this one- for additional help)
    • We will be using Canvas as the classroom.
    • Canvas tutorial is available here
    • You will need to be able to find files on your computer, cloud, or Canvas. 

Required Technology & Supplies

In order to be successful in this class, you will need:

  • Clover Park Technical College Canvas account. 
  • A desktop or laptop computer.
    • PC computers preferred, some software functions may not function properly on a Mac computer. 
    • This class has not reported issues with Mac computers.
  • High-speed Internet connection. You will be online a lot, so a high-speed Internet connection will make this course a smoother experience for you. 
    • Mozilla Firefox or Chrome are preferred internet browsers.  Edge does not play nice with Canvas
  • MyLab (Pearson site) access required.  See Materials list in the syllabus.
  •  Text:  Optional - all lessons are provided in videos or interactive lessons.  E-text included when code is purchased from publisher   
  • Free Guest access to site available for 2 weeks.  Some students have completed all the MyLab activities in that time and did not need to purchase an access code.  If you choose to follow the syllabus calendar, you will need to purchase a code.
  • Note taking tools (such as a pen and journal or notebook devoted to this class).  

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to . . .

  • Plan and modify a presentation, use help, create notes for slides, preview and print presentations.
  • Apply a design template; format the presentation; insert, resize, and recolor graphics, create a table in a slide; add and modify tab stops; create and manipulate a shape.
  • Insert slides from another presentation, create a design template, apply graphics and sounds.  Create and modify charts, graphics, and SmartArt.  Apply special effects and custom animation.  Use the Pointer Pen to mark slides during a slide show, hide slides, and prepare presentation materials.
  • Apply a design template from another presentation; use integration techniques:  importing, embedding, and linking.  
  • Understand the risks from Internet usage, email, and using removable devices in multiple machines.
  • Communicate electronically.  Open, reply, and forward messages.  Attach and open files.
  • Understand the legal and ethical use of information and computer resources

 

What will I do in the course?

Learning Activities

  • In each unit, you will have a mix of readings, demonstration videos, and practice activities. 
  • Some units will have a Discussion Board to provide feedback from you and your classmates.
  • Some Extra credit activities are also available.
  • Standardized Activity tests will be taken to demonstrate knowledge of the principles.

    • begin class prepared with materials and tools (computer)
    • reading your text
    • keeping up with coursework
    • Checking your course/email regularly for updates and messages
  • You can expect me to
    • provide you with the necessary materials to be successful 
    • Communicate!  Communication will be through email, discussion boards, videos and Zoom as needed.  I typically respond within 24 hours.
    • Keep your grade book current.  Assignments will be scored and posted within 2-3 days of due date.  Some score and post upon completion.
