About This Course

Welcome!

Instruction is provided through Canvas and Cengage - the course publisher.  All coursework is submitted fully online. Participation is required - that means actively completing required assignments.  Some assignments are available for a limited time so please watch the calendar.  Zoom meetings can be arranged as requested.

Watch for Announcements as I may be posting materials for classes in the announcements.  I have also posted lesson videos to explain the assignments.  Please view these and let me know if you need help or have any concerns.

The Purpose of this Class

Bookkeeping I

This course is designed to get you comfortable with the terminology, concepts and processes required to maintain company financial records according to industry standards.  We will practice concepts used for service and retail businesses organized as a sole proprietorship or partnership,

Course Pace

This course is designed to be completed in 60 hours over a 8 week period.  Reading, homework, tests and projects will need 1-2 hours daily to stay with the course schedule. 

The MindTap (Cengage software) is embedded in the course.  That means you will need to wait until the course opens to get registered to this MindTap classroom.  You will have limited access to the Canvas classroom until the course start date.

Prerequisites

  • Completion of MAT 092 or equivalent and completion of ENG 091 or equivalent or instructor approval.

  • Computer Literacy. 
    • We will be using MindTap (Cengage  Publishing interactive homework site) on the Web, Canvas, Microsoft Office Suite, and Email. 
    • Identify the location of the files - hard drive, flash drive, cloud, MindTap, Canvas
    • You will need to be able to find files on your computer, cloud, canvas or publisher site. 
    • Open, save, create documents and folders. 

Required Technology & Supplies

In order to be successful in Bookkeeping, you will need:

  • Clover Park Technical College Canvas account. 
  • A desktop or laptop computer.  Cengage and Microsoft software does NOT work well on a mobile device or tablet.  
    • PC computers preferred, some program software does not function properly on a Mac computer.
  • High-speed Internet connection. You will be online a lot, so a high-speed Internet connection will make this course a smoother experience for you. 
    • Mozilla Firefox or Chrome are preferred internet browsers.  Edge does not play nice with Canvas or the publisher software.
  • Cengage online homework and text/e-text access (see book information in syllabus) may purchase from CPTC Bookstore or Direct from publisher Links to an external site. ($40 includes access and e-text)

  • Note taking tools (such as a pen and journal or notebook devoted to this class).  

Optional/Recommended Supplies

  • Flash Drive for portable file storage and backing up your files.  Recommended for this class.
  • Some students prefer paper text - Cengage subscription includes e-text

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to . . .

  • Define terms and identify accounting concepts.
  • Complete a chart of accounts, beginning balance sheet, journalize transactions and post entries.
  • Complete a bank reconciliation statement and record transactions related to a checking account.
  • Establish and replenish a petty cash fund.
  • Complete a work sheet, income statement and balance sheet for a service business organized as a proprietorship and record appropriate entries.
  • Analyze and journalize transactions into appropriate journals, post to appropriate ledgers and prepare subsidiary schedules for a merchandising business.
  • Complete a work sheet, income statement, balance sheet and statement of owner’s equity for a merchandising business organized as a partnership and record appropriate entries.

What will I do in the course?

Learning Activities

  • In each unit, you will have a mix of readings, short videos, and discussions.
  • For each unit, electronic homework will be completed using MindTap (Cengage software).  This will give you practice with the concepts.
  • You will apply what you learn completing business simulation projects and assignments created with Word and Excel, and located in Canvas.
  • Standardized theory tests will be taken to demonstrate knowledge of the principles.

    • begin class prepared with materials and tools (computer and text)
    • reading your text
    • keeping up with coursework
    • Checking your course/email regularly for updates and messages
  • You can expect me to
    • provide you with the necessary materials to be successful 
    • Communicate!  Communication will be through email, discussion boards, videos and Zoom as needed.  I typically respond within 24 hours.
    • Keep your grade book current.  Assignments will be scored and posted within 2-3 days of due date.  Some assignments score and post upon completion.
