Summary and Examples
Note: Please see the multitude resources available in the materials section for more information as needed.
Paraphrasing – Putting the ideas of another into your own words. Even when you use your own words you must give credit to the source in the text of your paper as well as in the list of references at the end. Do this by including the author’s last name and year of publication in parentheses at the end of the sentence where the information is used. Or indicate the author’s last name in a tag line for the information and include the year of publication in parentheses.
When you paraphrase, you cannot simply change out a few key words or replace them with synonyms. You must use your own language and sentence structures.
A paraphrase is approximately the same length as the original material.
Summarizing - Putting ideas of another into your own words.
A summary is shorter than the original material. It is a type of paraphrasing.
Direct Quotation – Using information word for word from the source. This information must appear in quotation marks. When you use direct quotation, end the quote then in parentheses show the author’s last name, year of publication and page number where the information was found. If page numbers are not available for an online article, use paragraph numbers.

Sample paraphrase and in-text citation
It is nearly impossible to know just how much nicotine is inhales through e-cigarettes. There are just too many variables in e-liquids, equipment, temperatures, and inhaling practices of users (Arnold, 2014).
Sample direct quotation and in-text citation
Science writer Carrie Arnold suggests it can be difficult to determine nicotine concentration in e-cigarettes because “The labels on refill cartridges don’t always accurate reflect the amount of nicotine found in the e-liquid, nor does the amount of nicotine found in the liquid appear to correlate with the amount of nicotine found in the vapor” (2014, para. 16).
