COURSE DESCRIPTION

Presents the basic elements of safe practices related to construction job sites, emphasizing accident prevention and correct response in the event of injury and other medical emergencies on the job as well as personal protective equipment that is standard in the industry. Participants receive instruction in administering First Aid, CPR and AED (defibrillator use) as well as how to protect themselves against Bloodborne pathogens (BBP). Provides Forklift Operator Certification with classroom and hands-on training in safe forklift operation; Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Certification (Lead RRP --required by EPA to engage in remodeling certain types of older structures), OSHA 10 Construction Safety card, and American Heart Association First Aid and CPR certification card.

Upon completion of this course the learner will be able to:

Objective 1: Explain basic safety principles of lift operations

Objective 2: Demonstrate safe operation of a basic lift, including backing and turning
Objective 3: Demonstrate industry accepted hand signals for directing lift operations
Objective 4:    Demonstrate ability to determine load capacities of a lift and proper load distribution
Objective 5: Demonstrate moving pallet loads correctly from point to point
First Aid/CPR/AED
Objective 6: Administer basic emergency first aid for various types of injury
Objective 7: Administer adult CPR and direct others to assist until professional aid arrives
Objective 8: Ascertain when use of a defibrillator is warranted
Objective 9: Demonstrate safe operation of defibrillator
Objective 10: Explain precautions needed to prevent transfer of BBP
Objective 11: Explain how to safely move an injured person if necessary using materials at hand

Objective 12: Identify symptoms of heart attack, stroke, heat stroke, and hypothermia and apply appropriate remedies until professional aid arrives

Objective 13: Explain and demonstrate proper application of personal protective equipment (PPE) for lead assessment and remediation
Objective 14: Understand and explain hazards of lead exposure, especially for children
Objective 15: Identify potential trouble spots containing lead contaminates both indoors and outdoors
Objective 16: Correctly use testing tools and materials to determine if lead contamination is present
Objective 17: Explain and demonstrate corrective steps to be taken to remediate contaminated sites
Objective 18: Properly seal off areas to be cleaned up in order to prevent the spread of contaminates

Objective 19: Employ generally accepted remediation techniques

Objective 20: Remove all contaminated materials, including PPE, and properly dispose of it as hazardous waste

Objective 21: Explain the most common potential hazards on construction sites
Objective  22: Identify and demonstrate the proper use of appropriate PPE for construction work

Objective 23: Explain and employ proper protection equipment related to use of ladders, scaffolds, beam walking and trenches

Objective 24: Explain and demonstrate lock out/tag out procedures and identify when LO/TO needs to be used
Objective 25: Demonstrate proper technique for loading/moving wheelbarrows and loading/moving pallets using a pallet jack
Objective 26: Employ correct ergonomic strategies for lifting and moving heavy materials
Objective 27: Recognize, read and comprehend Material Science Data Sheets (Now Material Data Sheets, or MSDS/MDS) and apply appropriate safety measures as specified

25% – Assignments
10% – Quizzes
25% – Lab Component (participation) (group work)
