COURSE DESCRIPTION

Introduces basic tools of the trades with a focus on carpentry and provides hands-on experience in the proper techniques safe use of various hand and power tools as well as their correct care, maintenance and storage. Participants will learn how to set up an efficient work station, how various parts of a structure are framed up, and the basic principles of electric power and how that relates to employing proper electrical connections when using power tools. Students will be drilled on essential hands-on skills needed to pass entry assessments for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters, carpentry apprenticeship program.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course the learner will be able to:
Objective 1: Identify tools universally used in construction trades with a focus on, but not limited to carpentry.
Objective 2: Understand the uses of different styles of the same type of tools (e.g. hammers/saws, etc.)
Objective 3: Explain and demonstrate safe operation and handling of hand and power tools.
Objective 4: Explain and demonstrate proper cleaning, maintenance and storage procedures for common construction tools.
Objective 5: Understand elementary principals of electric power
Objective 6: Recognize and employ proper electrical connections for power tools
Introduction to Basic Carpentry Skills
Objective 7: Set up functional work station
Objective 8: Demonstrate correct techniques for hammering and accurately place a required number of nails in a nailing frame in the time allowed
Objective 9: Demonstrate measuring and sawing techniques used with power tools
Objective 10: Understand how to build wall, floor, roof, window and door framing using prints as a guide
Objective 11: Understand and explain the relationship of carpentry to the other construction trades
Objective 12: Make a tool/tote box for personal use from scratch using a pattern

25% – Assignments
10% – Quizzes
25% – Lab Component (participation) (group work)
