Course Summary: This class is designed to provide academic support to CPTC Practical Nursing students in academic reading and writing strategies, study skills, and test preparation. The I-BEST program teams up with, and functions in the context of, the following courses: Fundamentals of Nursing and Nursing in Mental Health, as outlined by Washington Adult Basic Education and I-BEST program outcomes.
This class is not graded, but it is very important for the students to log into the ABE 083 weekly modules, assignments, and files to take advantage of the resources and to document their attendance.
* This quarter, I (Marjut) will connect with students mainly via email, Canvas Inbox, Canvas Announcements, and weekly Zoom tutoring meetings for those of you, who would like to meet with me. I will make myself available on Zoom Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM but can be flexible, when the need arises. In addition, I will attend the Nursing lectures every Monday from 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM.
I am very excited to work with you in additional support, study skills instruction, and test preparation.
Weekly topics covered can be found in the course Modules.
During our regular, on-campus quarter, the students will participate in the CASAS Pretesting and Post-testing of Reading and Math. (CASAS stands for Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems; more information on www.casas.org.) Once a student has scored 250 in Math, 263 in the Reading portion, the CASAS testing required will have been satisfied. This quarter, there will be no CASAS, as the campus is closed.

I-BEST Course Expectations of Conduct-- What students should do to be successful:
* Log in, and explore, this course on Canvas every week, especially Mondays and Tuesdays; complete assignments that you find helpful to your study in the Nursing program.
* Communicate regularly with your instructor (Marjut) regarding your questions, concerns, or needs; check your student email on regular bases every week.
* Ask question and get clarification right away--don't wait until the last minute; I want to help you. If I don't know the answer, I will find out or direct you to the person who does know.
* Show respect toward everyone with your positive attitude, with your conduct, and words.
* Zoom-time: At virtual meetings, log in with your real name (full name), not screen name--for the safety of everyone attending. Dress appropriately for virtual meeting (i.e. cover fully).
GENERAL STUDY TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL PN STUDENTS:
* Utilize hand-written calendars and schedules for study, upcoming due dates and tests.
* Study every day; do all the required reading using close reading strategies and interactive reading techniques (see Modules).
* Manage and organize your time; stick to the schedule you created; avoid procrastination and cramming.
* Ask question; ask for help (sooner rather than later); connect with your instructors, who are here to help you to become an excellent nurse.
*Establish healthy routines and eating habits; exercise every day and get enough sleep. ("Early to bed, early to rise makes a man [or a woman] healthy, wealthy, and wise."--Right? )
* Reward yourself every day, or at the end of your week, with something fun, delicious, and relaxing.
