You will practice close reading with Chapter 3 of a Biology textbook, "Cells and Cellular Structure." You will receive a copy in class or will be able to access it in course modules.
Follow the steps in close reading and interacting with the course text:
1. Survey of the chapter --- Look over the chapter, titles, headings, and pictures (- reading the captions).
--> Look over the Objectives (at the beginning of the chapter).
2. Survey the list of key terms, and try to guess the definition of each; say them out lud.
3. Begin to read. Each subheading gives you an idea of the topic.
With a pencil/pen and at least one highlighter, read each paragraph and stop. The first paragraph introduces the topic.
While reading, highlight the key terms to know; unline unfamiliar words, and highlight or underline the main idea of the paragraph.
The write a note ---words or a phrase that will help you remember key information--- on the margin of each paragraph, or 2-3 paragraphs together. This is called annotatation.
