HUC Program Case Scenario Quizlet #2 You must have a score 38 points or better to pass.
Due in Canvas by Aug 14th, 3:00pm
Leanne Joy is a level-two certified Health Unit Coordinator. She has attained a level- two status through her many years of excellent work ethic, certification, and assistance to all levels of staff on her unit. Over the past 20 years, Leanne has been the preceptor for four new HUCs and about a dozen HUC intern(students) from Clover Park Technical College and she has trained numerous new nurses on their "desk orientation" day.
Years ago Leanne attended a preceptor workshop offered by the nursing education department. She learned that a preceptor could be perceived to have three roles: to act as a role model(one who serves as an example worthy of imitation); to act as an advocate ( one who supports or helps another by defending or comforting); and to act as an educator (one who teaches or shares knowledge with another). She also taught the principles of adult learning and the difference between andragogy, or a learner-focused approach to adult learning, and pedagogy or the art of teaching children.
Leanne always keeps a folder nearby that contains tools and some helpful hints she received in the workshop. Included in the folder are the four Knowles andragogical assumptions that:
1. Adults move from dependency to self-directedness.
2. Adults draw upon their reservoir of experience for learning.
3. Adults are ready to learn when they assume new roles.
4. Adults want to solve problems and apply new knowledge immediately.
Also included in the folder are; a copy of the hospital's mission (a written statement of purpose that defines the essence of the health care system) and vision statement ( a written statement defining the health care system's future and the direction that will be pursued to achieve it); a current health unit coordinator job description; an orientation schedule; and orientation checklist.
Something else Leanne took away from the workshop that she feels is very important- and yet she never had to write down- was the phrase" praise in public and criticize in private". She finds this to be extremely helpful when she is conducting orientations.
The role of the modern preceptor has become a little more challenging, and Leanne may have to precept while also serving as the only HUC on the unit. This means that she must answer the call lights, handle all communications, and coordinate all the unit activities at the same time that she precepts a new HUC. However, Leanne knows that this is all part of being a Health Unit Coordinator that people respect. It is during the busy times like this that Leanne must concentrate on her communication skills so that she can excel as a role model and be sure not to offend anyone. Leanne uses numerous tools to help her keep organinzed and prepared to answer questions from the new HUC, staff members, and visitors. These tool include bulletin boards, communication boards, and message boards.
