Course 129 Principles and Practices of Sterilization

PROGRAM PREREQUISITES: Complete 1st quarter with 75% or higher grade. 

Student must be at least 17 ½ years of age at onset of the program 

High school diploma or GED (transcript required) 

Meet requirements for admission to the college 

Basic computer skills recommended 

Able to lift 50 pounds as indicated by industry standards 

Able to stand on your feet for 8 hours 

Able to speak, read, write and understand the English language 

CSSP 126 Principles and Methods of Cleaning & Disinfection 

Classroom and laboratory experience in the fundamentals of cleaning and disinfection. Topics include water quality, water purification systems, chemical cleaning and disinfecting agents, handling and transporting of patient care equipment, and general cleaning protocols for instruments and equipment. The proper and safe handling of infectious waste is included. Students become familiar with quality assurance measures and techniques.

Course 129 Principles and Practices of Sterilization 

Students learn techniques and practice in the packaging, assembly, and sterilization of procedural trays, instrument sets, and sterile supplies. Major topics include methods of high- and low-temperature sterilization, sterilization chemicals, and packaging materials. Guidelines for point-of-use processing and transport are discussed. Operations, parameters, and maintenance of various sterilizers are learned, as well as monitoring of the sterilization process and quality control.

Course 132 Materiel Management/Central Service Applications 

This course is an overview of proper storage and storage concerns for sterile supplies and of the handling and distribution of materials in a medical facility. Topics covered include inventory management, replenishment methods, and tracking systems.

Grading 

Terms- definitions of words or phrases from the chapter. Using google for definitions will result in no points for the entire assignment. Also, don't use the glossary in the book, because the definition may not be relevant to the current chapter. Definitions worth multiple points probably need more than one explanation or example. Usually about 20-25 points 

Assignments- Assignment can be taken twice in an open book format. No late assignments will be accepted. Usually, 20-25 points. Assignments are due at 0900 AM and will be considered late if received after this time.  Zero points will be given for late assignments. 

Assembly Assignment is designed to capture the lab portion of the course. The assignment will be a multiweek assignment and account for 30% of your grade for course CSSP 129 

Chapter Quizzes are taken in the computer lab. No books, no notes, etc...  Quizzes are usually multiple choice of about 20-30 questions. 

Instrument Quizzes will be taken in the Lab No books, no notes, etc... Quizzes are fill in blanks, about 15-25 instruments per quiz. Quizzes will have bonus instruments. These instruments are not on the current quiz, but from previous quizzes. You won't know what the bonus instrument is until you take the quiz. The bonus instruments will be worth extra credit points.  

You are not allowed to access your phone or study materials while waiting to take the quiz. (Unfair to students already taking the instrument quiz if a waiting student has more time to study) Doing so will result in zero points for the quiz. I consider this unacceptable behavior (see cheating/unacceptable behavior standards) 

Comprehensive Exams- Each Comprehensive Exam is given only once. There are no make-up comprehensive exams or retakes. 

 Reviews will take place on the day before the quiz or exam. Take notes. My power points and chapter reviews will be posted on canvas. We will review quizzes and exams after each one. 

Extra Credit-There may or may not be extra credit. If there is it will usually be worth about 10 points to your quiz grade. 

 ASSESSMENT OF OBJECTIVES 

• Quiz after each unit of instruction.  
• Comprehensive exam at the end of each course. 

• Must have 75% grade to pass each course to go to second quarter.
