Course Description
Learn why professional hair services must be based on an understanding of the hair growth, structure
and composition. Gain skills in evaluating various hair and scalp conditions and disorders, including
parasites. Develop techniques for draping, shampooing, conditioning and scalp massage as the
foundation for attentive and skillful client care services. Learning how to refer clients for medical
attention is also covered in this course.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Summarize the purpose of Trichology for client care.
2. Differentiate between disorders and diseases of the scalp and hair.
3. Perform a scalp and hair analysis before proceeding with services.
4. Demonstrate and practice scalp and hair care services for clients.
5. Demonstrate an effective scalp massage.
6. Demonstrate infection control principles and practices and safety to comply with WA
State WAC to prevent the spread of disease or bloodborne pathogens.

Technical Skills Required
This class require minimal technical skills, such as attaching/submitting documents and using
Word. In addition, having reliable access to the internet and a computer/tablet is necessary for
succeeding in the course. Having access to a Scanner App (iPhone Note, CamScanner) will help
with exporting multiple scans into a single PDF file before submitting.

Each week will have different reading and practical assignments that are due on Friday by 9:30pm.
Submit your assignments through Canvas, unless posted otherwise. Every assignment in this
course is accompanied with specific guidelines and grading, as this will provide you with a road
map for learning and help secure the best possible grade for each assignment. All grades will be
posted on the online gradebook. It is important that you review the feedback/comments provided
and note areas that need improvement for future assignments
Assessments
Vocabulary Review, Quizzes, Tests and Practical Evaluations are used to assess student learning
and provide valuable information about how well students are retaining or struggling with the
information. Assessments play an important role in the process of learning and motivation.
Grading Distribution
Grade reporting is necessary to evaluate student learning at the end of a course. Summative
assessments are intended to evaluate student learning by comparing performance standards.
Through assessments, cosmetology students are required to complete each individual course with
a C (2.0, 75%) or above.

Written Exam 20%
Practical Exam 20%
Student must pass each criterion with a 75% or above.
Final grade will be calculated as follows:

Policies and Procedures
Policies are important for the classroom culture. They set the expectations for learning and
engagement. These policies include attendance, tardiness, dress code, academic integrity,
participation in class, missing assignments, missing exams, recording classroom activity, food in
class/clinic floor, cell phone use, working with clients, etc...

Program Policies:
Following a well-drafted policy maintains consistency and standard throughout our program.
- Students are expected to attend, participate regularly and conduct themselves respectfully
for all courses and with all instructors.
- Be prepared for clinic/classroom each day. Bring required materials to school,
cosmetology tools, pens/pencils, paper
- Comply with all infection control, safety and sanitation procedures
- Complete sanitation duties as scheduled
- Student parking is permissible behind building 8
- Security will issue violations to those out of compliance
- Students are not allowed in the dispensary area or reception area unless designated as a
worker in those areas
- Students are not allowed in the faculty offices unless faculty permission is given
- Following security policies is essential for everyone’s welfare.
- Do not open locked entries for anyone without prior approval from an instructor
Attendance: Program and Course Policies
Regular attendance and punctuality are vital attributes in determining academic achievement and
completing required program training hours. Washington State requires 1,600hrs (Cosmetology),
1,400hrs (Hair Design). Each month student hours are calculated towards program completion.
30hrs unsupervised training can be used towards missed training hours due to absences, per quarter
- Clock in/Sign in at 3:00pm Clock in and out in a timely manner, daily
- Tardiness is a disruption to the class
- Tardiness/Absenteeism begins following rollcall in increments of ½ hour
- Tardiness/Absenteeism requires notification to the instructor prior to class time
- Tardiness/Absenteeism can be prearranged and must be approved by instructor
- Clocking in/out for another student constitutes falsifying records and will result in
probationary action
- Reasonable accommodations for absence for reasons of faith or conscience and military
services
-Students who will be absent from course activities due to reasons of faith or
conscience and or military services may seek reasonable accommodations so that
grades are not impacted.
- Such requests must be made within the first two weeks of the quarter and should
follow the procedures listed in Student Absence for Reasons of Faith or
Conscience.
Professional Dress Code Standards: Program and Course Policies
A dress code sets the image of what our program wants to convey. A dress code policy in school
can help shape our program’s culture, strengthen team unity, and increase productivity. Ensuring
that all students follow the guidelines sends a consistent message to clients, potential customers,
and future students.
- Black smocks are to be worn every day
- Black professional style clothing on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
- White tops are optional (excluding smock)
-Fridays are Casual Day, denim is permitted along w/ smock maintaining a professional
image
- Student ID is to be visibly worn
- Fingernails must clean and not exceed ½ inch past the end of the finger
- Students must be clean and well-groomed
- Grooming styles dictated by religion and ethnicity are not restricted
- Clothing must be work-appropriate
- Clothing must project professionalism
- Clothing must be clean and in good shape
- Discernible rips, tears or holes are not allowed
- Clothing that is revealing or inappropriate are not allowed
- No cleavage, no mid-drifts
- Shorts, skirts or dresses must cover to mid-thigh
- No low riding pants that reveal underwear
- Clothing that are typical in workout and outdoor activities are not allowed
- Clothing with stamps or designs that are offensive or inappropriate are not allowed
- Instructor discretion is final
- Failure to follow dress code may result in loss of required program training hours.
Academic Integrity: Program and Course Policies
Academic integrity is the commitment to and demonstration of honest and moral behavior in our
program. We will start the course with a discussion about what constitutes respectful and
disrespectful behavior. The following violations may result in a referral to the Dean, which may
result in disciplinary actions:
- Tardiness creating a disruption of class time
- Clocking in and/or out for another student, falsifying records
- Behavior in the classroom that is disruptive to the teaching and learning environment
- Sleeping in class
- Actions and/or language directed to others that incites disruptive behavior
- Any 2 days of absences without notification to the instructor
- Dishonesty, including cheating, plagiarism, or knowingly furnishing false information
- Verbal or written threats and intimidation
- Theft or unauthorized use of college supplies, materials or tools
- Possession, use, sale, or distribution of any illegal drug while attending college or
college-sponsored event
- Respect differences, choose your words carefully. No profanity or any indecent or
obscene language
Assignment and Participation:
Classwork involves the active engagement of students in learning. Completing assignments by
the scheduled due date teaches students the important lessons in responsibility and hard work.
Classroom participation refers to the behaviors that students engage themselves in while in class.
This course requires you to respond to others' questions, participate in class discussions, and
provide feedback when asked.
- Complete all assignments
- -10% for each day an assignment is late, up to five days.
- Late assignments may not be accepted more than five days past due date.
- Instructor will not repeat lecture, give private lecture or repeat hands-on instruction
- Failure to attend a course Written Final or Practical Final examination is only acceptable
one time per quarter
- One makeup examination may be scheduled at a time (instructors’ convenience and
discretion)
- Missed quizzes or exams will receive a “0” grade
- Stay on task during classroom/clinic time
- Follow all safety and sanitation procedures
-Food in Class/Clinic Floor:
- No eating during classroom/clinic time
- If a medical emergency requiring food occurs, step outside the area and handle
that need as necessary
- Drinks are allowed only in a spill proof container
- Classroom may be used for eating when not in use for training (break time)
- Lunch/break is limited on time. Therefore, bringing food or snacks to be eaten in
Building 8
Cell Phone Usage:
- Cell phones, tablets and laptops are allowed in class when used for current studies in the
classroom/clinic floor.
- During demos, instructional periods and in front of quest speakers, cell phone must be put
away
- Earpiece may be used at instructors’ discretion
- Cell phones must be on silent at all times
- Phone calls are prohibited in classroom/clinic floor
- If you have a pending emergency, please make arrangements with the instructor at the
beginning of class
- Failure to use cell phones respectful and appropriately will result in loss of clinic floor
time and dismissal from class
