Welcome Faculty!

Welcome to the Cornerstones of College Instruction! This course is tailored to provide you with comprehensive onboarding, ways to get to know your peer support network, and an understanding of college instruction, from the basics of teaching to leveraging technology for effective course management. Learn about the college and dive deep into the intricacies of Canvas, the leading learning management system, and equip yourself with the skills to create engaging and accessible courses.

This course is structured into 27 modules, each focusing on a unique aspect of getting to know the college and learning about instruction. As you progress, you'll gain insights into the college, teaching, Canvas functionalities, and the tools to ensure accessibility for all students.

Module Details & Evaluation

The course will progress at the pace of one module per week for Fall , Winter, Spring (till May 15th, the PD deadline) quarters, and each module contains about one to four hours of work, resulting in a total of 45 hours of Professional Development.

Every module has assignments that will denote a specific number of hours for professional development. Every 10 point will encompass approximately one hour of learning and work.

Upon successful completion of the assignment(s) in each module, learners will be awarded a badge. This badge signifies 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, etc.. of Professional Development (PD) depending on the total point value of the module (10, 20, 30, or more points).

Accumulating 27 module badges, which corresponds to the completion of all modules, will earn the learner the "Cornerstones Course Completion Badge," a testament to their dedication and mastery of the course content.

Course Credit / Compensation

Part Time Faculty will receive one credit paid at the current credit rate upon completion of this course.

Full Time Adjuncts and Tenure Track Faculty will receive 45 hours towards their initial teaching certificate*. Completion of this course will satisfy the following hours for Skill Standards requirements: 11.5 hours for Skill Standard A, 17 hours for Skill Standard B, and 16.5 hours for Skill Standard D (see the Skills Standards Key Activities outlined at the beginning of every 'Module Overview and Objectives' page).

If Tenure Track Faculty have already reached their 90 required hours for their initial certification*, then the 45 hours will be applied towards their Professional Development Units for an increment (96 hours total are required for an increment/raise). *Note- academic faculty do not need to meet the skills standard requirement and do not need to obtain an initial teaching certification per WAC 131-16-070 through 131-16-094.

Late Policy

For this course, assignments are due on Sunday at the end of each week. However, because peer mentor check-ins can happen any time during the months of October, December, February, March, and May and the November Observation can happen at any point in November, there are not penalties for submitting work late.

This course is intended to give you weekly assignments, but it also in a 'cafeteria style' in that if you need to know how to insert images into Canvas, you can jump to Module 14 and do that work at any time. Or, if you need to get some insight into classroom management you can jump to Module 9 at any time. This is the other reason that there is no penalty for late work. Our intention is that you get what you need when you need it for your first year of teaching.

However, if you are working toward your initial teaching certification or are trying to get an increment, there are some hard deadlines:

If you are working toward your initial teaching certification, the hard due date is June 30th, 2025.

If you are working towards an increment/raise, the due date for all assignments is May 15th, 2025 for the increment to be applied on July 1st, 2025. If you miss that deadline, you can finish everything by June 30th, 2025, but your increment won't be applied until October of 2025. If you miss both of those deadlines, any hours you have accrued will roll over to your next year's running total of hours for an increment.

The Peer Support Network

In this course, you will be matched up will a mentor. You will be meeting with that person regularly to ensure that you are fully supported through your first year at CPTC. Mentor check-ins will be followed up with small reflection assignments. There will also be quarterly events for all mentors and mentees to get together.
