What is Panopto?

All faculty using the SBCTC Canvas platform have the ability to create and share recordings in Panopto. Panopto is not limited to, but can be used in the following ways:

  • Record demonstrations
  • Pre-record lectures to "flip the classroom"
  • Have students create a recording for an assignment
  • Upload audio or video files to share files with other users
  • Create and share video tutorials

You can also create short concept videos for known issues with course concepts for students to review. You can also create:

Whether you want to record your live classroom lectures for students' access on demand or want to record your lectures in your office for fully online delivery, visit the Panopto site for examples on using Panopto.

We are including Panopto here in this module because video, interactive video and captioned video are all important for addressing the principles of Universal Design for Learning and accessibility. See the "Guides" section of this page because the last link includes information of video captioning.

How Do We Access Panopto?

  1. Open a class in Canvas. Notice and click the term "Panopto Recordings" found within the course navigation.screenshot image of the Location of Panopto Recordings in the menu on Canvas.
  2. Open the Panopto Recordings and click "Create" to access the Recorder.

How to Share a Single Panopto Video

If you are creating videos inside a current class folder with students enrolled in it, students enrolled already have access to the videos you create. However, if your videos are recorded in a different shell such as a Master shell, Practice course or video vault, then you have to change the who has access to the specific video. Follow these steps if you need to share a specific video:

  • Log into Canvas, select your desired course where your Panopto video is stored, select “Panopto Recordings” from the course navigation menu to the left
  • Locate your video and hover your mouse over the video's thumbnail or name. You will see the buttons that appear. Click on "Share"

  • Under "Who Has Access," click on the drop-down menu and choose your preferred option:
    • Specific People: This option usually lists the creator of the class (usually the teacher) and the students enrolled in the class (the viewers)
    • Anyone at your institution with the link: This option is going to first unlist the video, then allow anyone at your institution access the video if they are given the link
    • Anyone at your institution: This option is going to make the video available to anyone at your institution and they will find it in the Everything section
    • Anyone with the link: This option unlists the video, so no one in the institution or outside the institution will see it unless they are given a link
  • Make sure to click save, to save this change. Now, you can embed this video in a Canvas Page using the Panopto embed tool in the Rich Content Editor or use the link to share with viewers

How to Share an Entire Folder of Videos

If you have a collection of videos in a folder that students do not have access to watch. Then follow these steps to learn how to share an entire folder:

  • Click on the folder you would like to share. In the right-hand corner of your screen, you will see a share icon, click on it to change the who has access to the folder
  • This will bring you to the Share tab of the folder settings
  • A subfolder may have this setting, "Inherit permissions from: ParentFolderName." If a subfolder is inheriting permissions, it has the same sharing settings as its parent folder (See screenshot). If the parent folder is shared, then this subfolder will also be shared along with it. If you want to change who can see videos in the subfolder, then you will have to add them in the parent folder settings. Click on the down arrow to change the permission.
  • You can make your choice and save changes
